Welcome to Sue Miller's web site

Privacy, Liberty and the Rule of Law

Sue Miller is a Liberal Democrat Member of the House of Lords, nominated in 1998 and sitting as Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer. She is Liberal Democrat chief spokesman in the Lords on Home Affairs. She is currently working on the Border,Immigration and Citizenship Bill which will shortly have its 3rd reading. After that Sue will be working on the Policing and Crime Bill. She will lead opposition to many of the worst parts of the Bill including those that will criminalise many more women and their clients who are involved in prostitution. Sue says "This has been an issue for over 3000 years. Why does the Government think that filling our jails with those that buy and sell sex is going to solve a problem?" Sue will also introduce amendments aimed at ending the recent police culture that makes protestors vulnerable to brutality and criminalisation for simply taking part in a peaceful protest - or planning one. She has recently spoken on important debates on domestic violence, data security, border security and counter-terrorism.

Sue Miller asked to Serve on Privacy Commission

Many of our traditional liberties are under threat or have been eroded already. With Henry Porter (Observer), Shami Chakrabati (Liberty) Sue joins Chairman David Heath MP to examine what has happened to our right to privacy. New technologies, including the ability of private companies or the authorities to look at our e mails without our knowing have changed the laws we need. We do not have the right safeguards in place to stop public and private snoopers. Our Commission will make proposals to restore the right to privacy that every law-abiding citizen in the UK should enjoy.

Sue hosts a PNND lunch in Addis Ababa where Parliamentarians passed a resolution calling for actions to move to a nuclear weapons free world including nuclear weapons free zones and adheerence by ALL states to treaties

Nuclear war has become an even greater threat to the future of the world. Leading international scientists, politicians and others all agree that the threat of a regional nuclear conflict which would have catastrophic global consequences, is a prime threat to our future. Sue will be devoting more time and energy to this crucial matter and supporting the growth of PNND, which enables all parliamenterians who share this concern, to make their voice heard on an international platform.

Marine Bill - All at Sea

Sue has put down many amendments to the Marine Bill. It is critical that it really will protect our precious marine ecosystems and that the interests of coastal communities are not forgotten.Do send any comments you may have on what you think needs to be considered when protecting marine area. The Bill will create marine conservation area, modernise the licensing laws covering evrything from fishing to energy and dredging. It will create a Marine Management Organisation to carry out planning in marine areas. Sue is concerned that people may not have much say over what this government quango decides. Although the Bill is a good thing bringing more protection to marine areas it must give those who live on or near the coast a say in the preservation or development of their own area. The Bill also introduces a coastal footpath for England which Sue supports. The South West has had a wonderful coast path for years. It is a model of what other regions could have.

The right to protest in Parliament Square has still not been restored.

Sue demands Freedom to Protest

The Government have said they will return the right to the British people to protest in Parliament Square without police permission or threats of fines. However they have not yet brought in any legislation to do this. Sue's Private Members Bill, introduced in January 2007, would have achieved a return of this right to the people. Now Sue will be asking more questions as to just what the Government will do to restore the right. When Gordon Brown became Prime Minister he said it would be restored but he has stopped any progress from happening. For the crazy sad history of this whole story see Mark Thomas' website www.markthomasinfo.com. Mark has run a brilliant campaign of mass lone demonstrations that shows just how bad, time wasting and silly the current law is. Did you know you need police permission to stand in Parliament Square with an iced cake if it has the word "peace" on it - if the police think that the cake is part of a protest you are making.
